The Company Store Down Alternative
The Company produces several comforters in its category of down alternative or down
free products. Chief among these are two types of fill: Primaloft and TCS Down Free.
Primaloft is a popular and famous synthetic polyester microfill that is found in
many products from sleeping bags to insulating clothes. It is said to have the
high warmth-to-weight ratio of any synthetic (but worse than down), and is expensive to manufacture. TCS Down Free seems to be a type of polyester fill proprietary to The Company Store. However, without the Primaloft special properties, TCS Down Free has a worse warmth-to-weight ratio and has been put in its "light weight" comforter category.
The Legend
One of the heavy down alternative comforters, which they call the
Legend, is a 400-thread count cotton fabric cover that is fitted with a sewn-box design.
Sewn-box means that extra stitching was used to create box compartments to hold the
fill, preventing it from shifting too much and creating excess or reduced fill in
spots. There's even an option to personalize your purchase with a monogram, good for
couples and families.
A Lighter Version and a Heavier Version
The light down alternative comforter with TCS Down Free fill is suitable for warmer
temperatures. The cotton thread count is a bit lower, but the cover fabric also has
a compartmentalized structure, in this case a sewn-diamond design for maintaining
fill. Customers have found the heavy product a bit ... heavy. But this is understandable
as TCS advertises the sizes are "Supersize" deluxe, meaning the dimensions
are about 4 inches longer in some directions compared to ones you find at
other companies. The extra size while nice because it covers even a queen-sized
bed nicely has the disadvantage of being quite heavy. However, if you want something
that will definitely cover the area of your bed, a Supersize is the way to go.
Premium Primaloft
These notes will be useful for a potential customer.
The fill used, Primaloft, is known to be the best synthetic in terms of warmth-to-weight,
you would certainly be getting the right amount of insulation for the weight of this comforter.
TCS also offers customers the choice of selecting the weight of the fill. This
can help adjust not only the compound weight of the comforter, but also the amount of
insulation required, which most certainly will vary depending on where the customer is from.
Dry Clean Only
The recommendation is that the down alternative comforter should be dry cleaned only.
Tests showed a little shrinkage, normal for such materials or products.
