Warm, Soft and Low in Allergens
The term hypoallergenic bedding actually describes a broad class of
products which, while resemble regular bedding, are made of materials
aimed at reducing irritants and allergens that cause allergies and
asthma in some people. There are not only a large number of such
products, but there are a large number of materials exploited for their warmth, softness and weight properties to play substitute to more traditional materials that can cause allergies and irritation.
Examples
For example, on a typical bed one may find a mattress topper, several
pillows, a comforter or on warm summer nights a blanket. Each of these
items can be made of traditional natural materials, or of down alternatives.
Additionally, the exact material of the down alternatives found in hypoallergenic
bedding can take on several forms. Some are derived from natural products
such as alpaca (a South American pack animal) which is finer and softer
than traditional wool. Other down alternatives are based on
synthetics such as polyester. To complicate things, each company or
manufacturer has its own proprietary blend of polyester, or perhaps
licenses one from a supplier.
Try It Out
The best way to begin to understand these complexities is to try out several
of these hypoallergenic bedding products. Trying lying on a hypoallergenic mattress
top, or sleep under a down alternative comforter for a change. To give you a
hand on your journey into the world of hypoallergenic bedding, let's review a bit
about the possible products.
Pillows, Blankets and Comforters
For pillows, blankets and comforters, the internal fill can be naturally derived
which are hypoallergenic in the sense that they have fewer of the irritants
found in goose material. Silk is a good example, and is popular in Asian
countries. Alpaca wool is another example. However, some people will find that
the warmth provided by these don't come close to down, in which case they
may try some synthetic bedding. Modern day synthetics come quite close to
down, although there are some proprietary blends that are clearly inferior.
Some will elect to use goose fill anyway, in which case a hypoallergenic
form can be found at a few outlets.
Mattress Pads, Toppers and Hypoallergenic Fiberbeds
For mattress pads and hypoallergenic fiberbeds, the internal fill can also be
any of one of the above discussed. But in addition, usually such items are
supplemented with a stiffening agent such as flight feathers that are different from
the soft undercoat of plumules in geese. A mattress pad ideally has a little
stiffness to give additional support, characterized by a hardness between that of
the bare box-spring mattress and that of a soft comforter. Very low quality
toppers made out of foam completely are technically also called hypoallergenic
bedding but are so uncomfortable that you might as well sleep on the floor. It's
recommended that you opt for a pad or fiberbed that is fill-based.
